Erin Winick and Emily Huber featured in CNN Money
We’re super excited to have some great new Makers with us this year. One of the first to sign up was Sci Chic, a company that makes 3D printed and laser cut jewelry and accessories. Recently featured in CNN Money in the Women Entrepreneurs category, Sci Chic is run by Erin Winick and Emily Huber , a couple of 21-year-old engineering students at the University of Florida. They’re not only
awesome designers, they’re also committed to getting kids excited about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). We asked them to tell us more about themselves, what they’re bringing to Gulf Coast MakerCon 2016 and why they’re excited about coming out to the event.GCMC: What do you make?
SC
: Sci Chic makes customizable science and engineering inspired jewelry and accessories with advanced technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting. We design our pieces on computer aided design software and 3D print them in everything from the same plastic that LEGOs are made out of to stainless steel or even gold.GCMC: Why do you make it?
SC: We have two main goals with our jewelry. First, our goal is to allow people to better customize their jewelry to exactly what they want in an easy way ranging from size to material to color. Secondly, we hope that by using science as an inspiration for all of our pieces we will be helping to promote science literacy and the beauty in science.
GCMC: Why do you want to share what you make or why might others be interested?
SC: We hope that by sharing our jewelry we will be able to educate the public both about
the science that inspired the pieces and about the versatility of things like 3D printing. There is beauty in everything from the trajectory of the Apollo 11 moon mission to circuit boards and we hope to show this!GCMC: What do you hope to take away from Gulf Coast MakerCon?
SC: I hope to meet people of every age that love making, science, fashion, engineering or just jewelry! Events like this are so much fun because they give you a chance to meet people from all walks of life that share the same interests as you or have fantastic passions of their own that they are willing to teach you about.
GCMC: Why do you think Gulf Coast MakerCon is important?
SC: MakerCon is important because it is promoting the sharing of people’s passions. It is a unique place for you to get inspired and learn about things you might not have even known existed!
