One of our new Maker groups this year is ASME@USF . A student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) based at the University of South Florida, ASME@USF is a nonprofit organization for engineers, typically mechanical engineering students, to develop engineering skills and also create.
Katie Hart, Chairman of ASME@USF, and an Undergraduate student in Mechanical 
Engineering at the University of South Florida, told us a bit more about what the group does, and what they’re bringing to Gulf Coast MakerCon this year.
“We have a competition that changes every year called the Student Professional Design Competition which is robotics based and industry related. We strive to participate and create a working prototype for this competition.
“ASME@USF also recently built a 10HP motor driven Hovercraft out of foam, plywood, epoxy, fiberglass, and a nylon skirt. We like to encourage students at all levels, K-College and even non-engineering adults, to participate in fun hands on activities where one can learn and make interesting things.
“We hope that participating in this year’s Makercon will become a traditional for this organization and also be a way for us to spread and gain knowledge.”
